British High Court Grants Charlie Gard More Time [update]

The British High Court has ruled that Charlie Gard stay on life support until July 25, 2017. Gard is to be evaluated by an American physician, Michio Hirano, early next week. Dr. Hirano is a neurologist who specializes in diseases of the mitochondria.

In the last week, the British High Court accepted “new information” into the baby’s condition provided by researchers from the Vatican’s children’s hospital. Charlie Gard suffers from infantile-onset encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome.

The condition Charlie suffers from is a very rare genetic disorder. He is just the sixteenth person known of in the world with the disorder. His parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, are both carriers of the defective gene, but were unaware of it until after Charlie was born.

Hirano believes he can help the infant boy, but admitted that there is probably only a 10 percent chance to help Charlie recover. Doctors at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London insist that nothing more can be done. They believe life-support should be withdrawn. The single-payer health insurance system in Great Britain is run by the government, and they concur with the UK doctors.
