Last week’s TIL Journal concluded with an addendum concerning the news that President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for the coronavirus. On Monday, Oct 5th, after just three days in Walter Reed hospital, the President returned to the White House and will complete his treatment regimen there.
Moreover, hospitalization was never required for the First Lady, and she has remained asymptomatic as of this writing. The LORD has graciously answered our prayers, and we thank Him for that.
Upon returning from the hospital, President Trump recorded a video statement. With that statement, in less than a 90 seconds he gave the greatest speech he has ever given.
The Left hated it
The reaction of the Leftmedia, aka the propaganda wing of the Democrat Party, to the President’s statement was just short of full-blown hysteria and an epic amount of venom thrown at President Trump. That confirms this was a fantastic, effective, and powerful address to the nation.
My favorite retort to the ridiculous ‘outrage’ of the Left was posted on social media by actress Kirstie Alley, who correctly noted in colorful language that it wouldn’t have mattered if the President had worn a mask or even a hazmat suit, the Leftmedia would still have trashed him with their vitriol. She summed it up nicely by writing, “You hate him. Just report that.”
That’s called hitting the nail squarely on the head. It could sum up every Leftmedia commentary about Donald Trump from the time he declared he was running for President.
In a very competitive field vying for the title of most fear-promoting and hate spewing on the Left some comments from MSNBC and CNN commentators share the prize. MSNBC’s Joy Reid called the President’s address from the balcony of the White House a “Mussolini moment,” referring to the Italian fascist dictator and ally of Hitler during WWII.
This is another example of Leftist projection that they often engage in when railing at President Trump. However, it also further reveals the canker sore of hatred festering in their souls toward this President.
That festering expressed its diseased nature through a particularly bizarre statement by Mika Brzezinski on MSNBC when she accused President Trump of “manslaughter” by supposedly passing coronavirus to others in the White House. The accusation is ridiculous on its face besides the fact that she has no way of knowing how anyone else in the White House contracted COVID-19.
That hatred was also on full display at CNN with a myriad of guests, regardless of their qualifications to give medical advice, who put forth absurd claims that President Trump was recklessly endangering others by not wearing a mask. His statements that touted hope instead of fear were called “outrageous,” “heartless,” “cruel,” “disrespectful,” “insulting,” “disgraceful,” among other nasty screeds by almost everyone employed to speak at CNN.
President Trump has pushed a hopeful and encouraging outlook in the face of the threat of COVID-19. The Left’s response is to inculcate fear and terror and say we must live our lives cowering and dominated by this virus.
The President’s words were filled with hope and encouragement at just the right moment
When one reflects on where the country, indeed most the world, is now concerning the response to COVID-19, it has not been a time of great hope for most people. They have been suffering through the bleakness of forced imprisonment in their homes and the requirement to cover their faces in submission to the fear fomented by Leftist media and authorities for more than half a year.
President Trump stood with a hopeful and optimistic outlook reflected in both his manner and words. By stating that COVID-19 could be beaten, by stating the promise of the therapeutics and a coming vaccine, and by being a living demonstration of someone in a relatively high-risk category for serious illness or death having come through so well showed there is hope in the face of the virus.
A diagnosis of positive for COVID-19 isn’t an instant death notice and that can be seen clearly now. We now know with literally multiple millions of recorded cases, and an estimated infection of now 10% of the world’s population, or 760 million people, that even the elderly have at least a 99.5% chance of survival from a COVID-19 infection if caught and isolated early with proper medication.
President Trump also delivered a dose of encouragement in its truest meaning with this address. The word encourage is a compound of a prefix, en, and the word courage that transforms the noun into a verb.
The definition first given for the word “encourage” at dictionary.com is,
to inspire with courage, spirit, or confidence:His coach encouraged him throughout the marathon race to keep on running.
It means to try to infuse someone with courage. Courage to face a crisis is what Americans and the world need right now, and that is what the President communicated and demonstrated as the leader of the free world.
There are similarities that can be drawn between the pandemic crisis in America and another crisis in our history, WWII. At the beginning of WWII, America made mistakes and suffered setbacks, starting at Pearl Harbor.
President Roosevelt uttered these immortal words when America plunged into the war that “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” He was right then, just as President Trump is right now.
The release of the coronavirus from China by the Chinese Communist Party was the ‘Pearl Harbor’ in the pandemic war. Now that we have gained more knowledge and seen that we are on offense now and will reach victory soon against COVID-19, at least if we don’t listen to the Leftmedia and the Democratic authorities.
President Trump has showed such leadership throughout his battle with coronavirus offering hope and encouragement to the nation. Moreover, the President promoted freedom to live over the hysterics and fear-mongoring of the Left.
He promoted freedom over fear
The one piece of President Trump’s statement that received the greatest attention is when he said “Don’t let it dominate your life.” With that statement, he promoted freedom over fear and connected with the aspirations of liberty-loving Americans everywhere.
Fear of the unknown is what drove us to the state shutdowns, and now, as we actually know a lot more about COVID-19 and who it endangers and its extremely low death rates, the knowledge should have driven those states to reopen. Unfortunately, the predictable attempt by the Leftist Democrats like Gov. Andrew Cuomo to renew and extend shutdowns is evidence he loves the power and doesn’t intend to let it go.
When the President declared that COVID-19 shouldn’t dominate our lives he stood for individual freedom over fear and that is a threat to Leftists’ appetite for power. Moreover, there is strong evidence that President Trump is also right to oppose lockdowns and shutdowns and promote opening the country for both economic and health reasons.
The primary tactic which has been used to control COVID-19 and is still being used in certain blue states today is the “lockdown” strategy. A new petition endorsed by a group of over 6,400 medical and public health scientists and over 13,000 medical practitioners with top-grade credentials known as the “Great Barrington Declaration,” shows that the prolonged lockdowns were a terrible mistake.
Moreover, the recommendations from this declaration are that normal life for those groups not vulnerable should resume immediately. It also notes that continuing the lockdowns will cause catastrophic damage to public health.
Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed. Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza. As immunity builds in the population, the risk of infection to all – including the vulnerable – falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity – i.e. the point at which the rate of new infections is stable – and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine. Our goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity. The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk. We call this Focused Protection. Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold. Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity.
The three principal authors of this declaration have impeccable credentials as epidemiologists from Harvard University, Oxford University, and Stanford Medical School. Keep in mind that this was released last Sunday, October 4th. I wonder how many have yet heard of this ‘Declaration’ much less heard any of the Leftist Gov. acknowledging its scientific status.
This should end the debate over lockdowns against COVID-19 forever. The welfare of public health demands that we must re-open now, in America and around the world.
So Andrew Cuomo, when you threaten to shut down Synagogues in New York for violations of your orders, you are not following the science. You are seeking further and continued control over your populace while pleading a case that can now only be characterized as an exercise in political power.
Gov. Cuomo’s response to the President’s assertions not to fear COVID-19 was to stoke the fire of fear and declare that we should be, indeed must be very afraid. Cuomo is not following the science, he is following his own path to power by making his citizens afraid.
The same is also true if former Vice President Joe Biden’s assertions for a national mask mandate, and recent response to President Trump where Biden pleads with us to wear a mask because that’s supposedly scientific. As has been discussed previously in this journal, that is not the case.
However, the way in which President Trump was the most right was to choose freedom over fear and show that you have to live with liberty in order to truly live. That is a cherished American value harkening back to the fiery speech of founder Patrick Henry,
Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?” As he spoke, Henry held his wrists together as though they were manacled and raised them toward the heavens. “Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty”—Henry burst from his imaginary chains and grasped an ivory letter opener—“or give me death!” As he uttered these final words, he plunged the letter opener toward his chest, mimicking a knife blow to the heart.
We have all lived with paralyzing fear from COVID-19. It is time to wake up from such fear and take up our God-given inalienable Constitutional rights and declare that we will no longer allow the virus to rule our lives.
Instead, with God’s help and guidance, let us embrace the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness the LORD has granted us as spelled out in our Declaration of Independence and codified in the Constitution. That is the path to overcoming this pandemic crisis and the model for whatever other trials await us all.
That is the path our President is offering to us if we will but grasp it and begin to emerge from the COVID malaise. I pray we will join President Trump and embrace that path as a nation.
So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. James 2:12 [ESV]
